What is the best free POS software for retail?

Square for Retail is widely considered the best free POS software for retail in 2026. Its free plan covers sales, inventory tracking, and basic reporting with no monthly fee.

Loyverse is another strong contender, especially for small shops that want built-in loyalty features at no cost. PayPal Zettle offers a free app with solid inventory tools for merchants already in the PayPal ecosystem.

The catch with free tiers is limited features, transaction caps, or restricted support. Many retailers find that a bundled deal, where a processor provides full POS software at no charge in exchange for a merchant processing agreement, delivers more capability than any stripped-down free plan.

Tennessee retailers wanting that full-featured bundled approach can work with a local POS provider who handles software, hardware, and onsite installation in one agreement.
